Grit: An Overlooked Predictor of Success

opportunityThe music industry houses an interesting discrepancy: Success mesmerizes, but hard work intimidates.

In her widely acclaimed studies, psychologist Angela Duckworth showed that grit, or sustained hard work, is the biggest predictor of success in a variety of fields. In a Ted talk, she defined grit as, “perseverance and passion for long term goals.”

However, we forget this perseverance when captivated by a musician on stage. We forget that a performance represents a mere snapshot in a predominantly “gritty” life filled with discipline and sacrifice.

In a world of instant gratification, self-control sounds woefully limiting. That could be why our society underestimates the significance of grit. Instead, we equate talent with success. Yet talent can only flourish when paired with grit.
